Sedum 'Purple Emperor', also known as Fatwort, is a striking and easy perennial that gives your garden a cool, dark atmosphere. Its leaves are almost black with reddish-brown and purple tones, narrow in shape and water-holding, as with all succulents. From August to September it blooms with large, purple-pink flowers in parasol shape on bare stems. The plant grows 30 cm tall without flowers and can reach up to 50 cm with flowers. These flowers are perfect for picking as cut flowers and attract bees and butterflies, giving your garden extra life in autumn.
This Sedum likes a sunny spot, preferably in a south-facing garden, and grows well in nutrient-rich soil that is not too dry. Thanks to its own water supply, it can withstand dry periods, but a little moisture helps it even better. Don't put it in too dark shade, as its dark colour will make it almost disappear. In a border, it looks great next to lighter plants - the contrast makes it shine. It can fall apart a bit because of its height, but if you plant it in groups (about 7-9 per square metre), they support each other and it stays neatly upright.
The 'Purple Emperor' is completely hardy and survives hard frosts without any problems. It is ideal for borders, group planting, pots or planters and requires little care: a sunny spot and occasional watering is enough. With its dark leaves and late flowering, it is a simple but powerful addition to your garden that brings colour deep into the season!
