Trollius europaeus 'Lemon Supreme', also known as Bullet Buttercup, is a cheerful and compact perennial that will give your garden a sunny boost in spring. From April to May, sometimes even into July, it blooms with bright, lemon-yellow flowers that look like small bowls. The flowers start as round buds and grow on sturdy stems above the dark green, toothed leaves. This plant stays lower than many other Trollius species, reaching a height of 30-40 cm, and forms a neat clump that does not take up too much space.
This Bullet Buttercup likes to stand in sun or semi-shade and likes soil that is medium to moist - a spot along a pond or stream edge is ideal. It can handle somewhat drier soil than other Trollius species, but with a little moisture it grows and flowers even better. The flowers are perfect for picking as cut flowers and bring bees and butterflies to your garden, providing extra life. Sometimes it gives a small second bloom in autumn, which is a nice bonus.
In terms of care, it is simple: plant it between February and June at 20-25 cm intervals (about 9 per square metre) in well-drained soil, and it does the rest. It is completely hardy, so cold is not a problem. Put it in a border, alongside water or in a pot, and you have an easy, compact plant that will brighten up your spring with its fresh yellow colour. A simple choice for a garden full of spring feelings!
