Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen', better known as Bullet Buttercup, is a cheerful and sturdy perennial that brightens up your garden in May and June with striking, orange-yellow flowers. These flowers are spherical when closed and resemble large buttercups when they open - hence the name. They grow on long, sturdy stems and are also perfect for picking as cut flowers. The plant grows 60-80 cm tall, has green leaves and grows in a neat clump, making it ideal for borders or groups in the garden.
This Bullet Buttercup is native to China and likes a sunny spot, but semi-shade is also possible. It likes humus-rich, well-drained soil that stays slightly moist - a spot at the edge of the pond, for example, is great. It blooms just after the tulips, a time when there are not many orange flowers yet, bringing fresh colour to your garden. The flowers are lightly scented, adding some extra atmosphere, and they also attract bees for some life in the garden.
In terms of care, it is easy: it needs no special attention, but it does not like drought, so water it occasionally if it is dry for a long time. In winter it loses its leaves, but it is well hardy and comes back in spring. Put it in a border, along water or among other plants, and you have a simple, colourful plant that will brighten up your spring and early summer!
