Description

Gojiberry variety: Lycium barbarum, goji berry

The Lycium Barbarum, better known as the Goji berry or Boksdoorn, is a hardy shrub that originates from China and Tibet. This fast-growing plant thrives on poor soil and can tolerate sea wind. In the spring, the elongated leaves grow and during flowering, purple flowers appear on the one-year-old wood. After flowering, oval fruits form that are initially green and turn orange-red when ripe. The berries are very medicinal and contain vitamins, carotene and amino acids, among other things. They help against various complaints such as premature aging and respiratory diseases. The Goji berry can be processed into jam, juice, jelly, dried into currants or even used to make tea. Please note that the shrub has sharp thorns and is suitable for forming an impenetrable hedge of up to 150-200 cm.

It is well resistant to downy mildew but winter protection below -15c degrees is recommended. The climbing variety has no thorns and can develop shoots up to 3 meters long. It is one of the better thornless blackberries and can be picked weekly. Ideal for freezing.
