Description
The Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea', also known as Canadian dogwood, is a striking deciduous shrub that stands out especially in the winter months thanks to its beautiful yellow branches. In May and June this shrub adorns itself with small white flowers, followed by white to blue berries in August and September. The leaves get a beautiful orange-red autumn colour.
- Latin name: Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea'
- Dutch name: Canadian dogwood
- Family: Cornaceae
- Location: Full sun, partial shade
- Height: Up to 3 m
- Flowering period: May – June
- Plant type: Shrub
- Flower color: White
- Leaf color: Green
- Soil moisture: Preferably fertile, not too dry soil
This dogwood thrives best in fertile, not too dry soil in a spot with sufficient sunlight or in partial shade. To maintain the vibrant colour of the branches, it is advisable to prune the branches back to about 10 cm every now and then. If this is done to all branches, the shrub will remain quite low (about 1 m). If this is done to about 1/3 of the branches, it can reach its adult height. Prune this shrub after the winter for healthy growth. The Canadian dogwood is known by various names, including the Latin name Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea' and the older name Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea'. This ornamental shrub stands out because of its beautiful yellow-green twigs. Fresh green leaves appear in the spring and get a beautiful dark red autumn colour. Although the Canadian dogwood loses its leaves in the winter, the yellow branches provide a beautiful view in your winter garden. The white flowers that appear between the green in May and June are followed by white berries.
