Description
The Prunus incisa 'Paean', also known as the Fuji cherry, is a lavishly flowering ornamental cherry with a striking upright and irregular growth form. From March onwards, this shrub/tree adorns itself with abundant clusters of pink flowers, which hang gracefully on the bare branches. After flowering, small black fruits appear. These beautiful blossoms come into their own in full sun. An additional advantage is that pruning is not necessary. In autumn, the leaves undergo a beautiful transformation to a vibrant orange-red colour.
'Paean' grows into a large shrub or small tree, with a height of about 4 meters. The crown has a broad vase shape, which eventually becomes almost round and is densely branched. The leaves are ovate in shape, with a serrated leaf edge and a pointed tip. When they emerge, the leaves show a bronze hue, which later in the summer transforms into a deep dark green. In the autumn they show off a rich orange-red color. From the end of March to the beginning of April, the tree opens full clusters of bright pink flowers. The flower buds are slightly darker and retain this hue when they finish flowering. The dark flower color, a characteristic feature of the P. incisa 'Paean', is the most important ornamental value of this beautiful tree. It falls within winter hardiness zone 6b.
