Description
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Charm' is a striking mophead hydrangea with medium-sized, rounded flower heads, up to 15cm across, densely covered with deep pink petals from early spring to late summer. Flower colour varies depending on soil pH. In alkaline soils the flowers are pink, while in acidic soils they turn rich blue. Equally attractive, the foliage consists of dark green, large, glossy, serrated leaves which turn to shades of orange and red in autumn, extending this hydrangea's season of interest. 'Charm' looks great as a solitary or in small groups anywhere in the garden where it gets morning or filtered sunlight.
This deciduous shrub has a rounded growth habit and typically grows 120-150 cm tall and wide.
- A partial shade lover, it thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Full sun is tolerated provided constant moisture is provided.
- No serious pest or disease problems.
- Perfect from basic planting to tub planting. Planted in groups in a sheltered location or as an accent plant. Effective as a hedge and also excellent as a cut flower!
- Remove faded flowers to promote new flowering.
- To change the color of your Hydrangea, add aluminum sulfate to the soil to make the flowers bluer or add lime to the soil to make them pinker. Treatment should be done in time (late fall or early spring).
- This beautiful deciduous shrub should be pruned after flowering by cutting the stems back to a few healthy buds. Weak or winter-damaged stems can be pruned in early spring.
- The Hydrangea macrophylla species is native to Japan. It occurs in coastal areas as well as in mountains in Japan, from Honshu southwards. This species is naturalised in China, New Zealand and America.
- May cause mild stomach upset if ingested, and contact with the leaf may aggravate skin allergies. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
