Description
Hylocereus undatus (Dragonfruit/dragon fruit/pitaya) is used both as an ornamental and a fruit crop and is a fast growing, sprawling cactus. The green stems are usually three-sided, fleshy, jointed and can grow up to 6 m (20 ft) long. They climb by means of roots which attach themselves to the surface on which they grow or climb. The dragonfruit blooms with large and beautiful white flowers, 35 cm (14 in) long, and appear in late spring to early summer in temperate climates. In tropical climates the plant can have up to 4-6 flowering and fruiting cycles per year. Very fragrant, they only open at night. When pollinated they give way to edible, fleshy red fruits with prominent scales. Their sweetly flavored white or red pulp is studded with small black seeds. Dragonfruit is estimated to last about 20 years and can produce up to 220 lb (100 kg) of fruit per year after only 5 years from planting.
