Amelanchier alnifolia Sleyt, better known as the Saskatoon Berry Bush or Currant Tree, is an ornament to any garden. With calm, upright growth, this shrub reaches a height of 2 to 2.5 metres. What makes Amelanchier alnifolia Sleyt so special is its versatility and stunning characteristics.
During the autumn months, the leaves undergo a brilliant transformation to a vibrant red, spreading a beautiful glow. What makes this shrub extra special is its large crop of blue-black fruits with a light, waxy covering. These fruits, 10-12 mm in diameter, are sweet-tasting and can be eaten fresh or processed. The Saskatoon berry bush is not only a nice addition, but also a favourite among insects and birds. The health-promoting substances in the berry, similar to those of blueberries, make this shrub even more valuable. In addition, Amelanchier alnifolia Sleyt is extremely winter hardy in our climate and thrives well in a variety of soil types, preferably moist soil and a sunny to semi-shaded location.
