This set of three different Butterfly Bushes (Buddleja davidii) offers a beautiful diversity of colours and shapes to enrich your garden.
First up is the imposing 'Ile de France' (Buddleja davidii 'Ile de France'). This butterfly bush can grow to a hefty 2.5 metres and is adorned with plumes of lilac flowers during the summer months from July to September. Its Mediterranean appearance may well earn it a special place in your garden. This cultivar, which dates back to around 1930, remains a favourite choice with butterflies because of its continuous flowering.
Then we have the upward-growing 'Royal Red' (Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red'). With its purple-red flowers, which tend more towards red, this butterfly bush is a beautiful addition. Although the flower plumes are relatively modest, 'Royal Red' blooms profusely in the months of July and August, attracting many butterflies, bees and other insects. This variety reaches a height of 150-250 cm and thrives best in a sunny and well-drained soil.
Finally, we have the majestic 'White Profusion' (Buddleja davidii 'White Profusion'). With its pure white flowers carried on long, sturdy panicles, this Butterfly Bush is the queen of the large-flowered white cultivars. This variety attracts the most butterflies and prefers a sunny location where it produces abundant nectar. This variety reaches a height of 200 cm
In the spring you can prune the branches back to about 30 cm above the ground. This will make the butterfly bushes grow back in the same year and bloom richly on the young wood.
