Salvia Nemorosa 'Ostfriesland', better known as Sage, is an easy and strong perennial that makes your border beautiful all year round. From May into summer it blooms for the first time with deep purple-blue flowers in long spikes, and if you cut it back after flowering, a second round will appear in autumn. Growing about 50 cm tall, it is sturdy and bushy, with fresh green leaves that match the flowers well. After flowering, the dark bracts remain decorative, adding extra atmosphere.
This Sage attracts bees and butterflies, so your garden will be nice and lively. The flowers are also perfect for picking as cut flowers. It grows in almost any soil, as long as it is not too wet, and prefers sun or light shade. In late autumn it dies off above ground, but leave the barren stems and seed heads - these help birds and insects through the winter and protect the plant from cold. In spring, cut everything away, and it will start all over again.
'Ostfriesland' is one of the best-known varieties of sage, loved for its simplicity and reliability. Put it in a border or along a path, and you have a plant that requires little but gives a lot. Combine it with other plants such as grasses or roses for a beautiful effect. A simple, cheerful choice that you will enjoy for a long time!
