Rodgersia pinnata, also known as Scout-at-Night or Watching Leaf, is a sturdy perennial that gives your garden a special look. Its large, ribbed leaves are dark green to greenish-grey with a little brownish-red sheen, and remain beautiful to look at throughout the season. From May to June, sometimes until September, it blooms with long panicles of pale pink to white flowers that rise above the leaves. The plant can grow 80-125 cm tall and grows wide, so give it plenty of room to shine.
This Scout's Night loves semi-shade, but can also stand in the sun as long as the soil is moist enough. It needs humus-rich, nutritious soil that retains water well - dry or windy spots are not for it. A spot near a pond or in a shady border is ideal, where the foliage comes into its own. In the sun, the leaves sometimes get an extra nice colour, but in too little shade, it can suffer. So it is a plant that requires some attention in terms of location, but if it is well positioned, you won't have to worry about it much.
It is completely hardy and grows a little bigger every year, making it perfect as an eye-catcher in your garden. Put it in a border or as a loose plant, and it brings structure and tranquillity with its decorative leaves and flowers. In terms of care, it is simple: provide enough moisture and give it space. An easy choice for those who love a garden with character!
