The Nashi pear, also known as the Japanese sand pear or Asian pear, is a valuable addition to any garden. This Japanese selection, Pyrus pyrifolia 'Shinseiki', is known for its early fruiting, allowing you to enjoy delicious pears at a young age. The fruits ripen in September, so be sure to harvest early before the insects discover them.
The Nashi pear is distinguished by its juicy, sweet fruits that are shaped like apples. This makes them also known as apple pears. The fruits are deliciously crunchy and sweet when ripe, perfect as a refreshing thirst quencher straight from the tree.
The flowers of the Nashi pear are beautiful, with five white petals that cover the tree abundantly in April. For optimal fruiting, it is advisable to plant several varieties, such as Hosui, Kosui or Nijisseiki, nearby for cross-pollination.
Although the Nashi pear looks like an apple, it is actually a relative of the pear. The tree thrives in the Dutch climate and can produce large harvests of delicious, aromatic fruits that have a complex flavor, ranging from pear, apple to melon.
To promote good fruit set, it is important to thin the pears in early June. This prevents the tree from bearing too many fruits, which can be detrimental to the size and taste of the fruits.
The Nashi pear cannot be self-pollinating, so make sure to plant another (nashi) pear nearby for pollination. Harvest starts in August and the pears can be eaten fresh or used in various baking and cooking dishes, such as pickling and salads.
Originally from Japan, where they are highly valued for their delicious and healthy properties, the Nashi pear can also bear fruit in a cold spring, despite the possible night frost. With its beautiful blossoms, tasty fruits and easy care, the Nashi pear is a must-have for every garden!
