Beschrijving
The Pyrus communis 'Triomphe de Vienne' is a classic French hand pear known for its impressive, large fruits and graceful growth habit. With its origins in 1864, this pear tree has been loved by both professional growers and private garden enthusiasts for over a century and a half.
Fruit
The pears of the 'Triomphe de Vienne' are large to very large and can weigh up to 500 grams each. They have a greenish skin with a bronze-coloured pattern and a soft, white-yellow flesh. The taste is juicy, soft and pleasantly sweet. This makes the pear ideal as a hand pear, although they are mainly suitable for direct consumption due to their short storage time. Ripeness for picking is reached in the first half of September.
Flowering and pollination
This tree blooms around the beginning of May with beautiful white blossoms. The 'Triomphe de Vienne' is not self-pollinating and therefore needs another pear tree nearby for a good harvest. Suitable pollinators are:
- Beurre Hardy
- Charneux
- Doyenné of Comics
- Williams
Growth and location
The tree grows moderately strong and forms a broad pyramidal, semi-open crown that can reach 4-7 meters high. During the fruiting season, the branches hang gracefully. For optimal growth, a sunny location in well-drained, not too moist soil is recommended.
