Beschrijving
Prunus Gisela® 5 is the most widely planted dwarf rootstock for cherries in Europe and is known for its excellent performance in different soil and climate conditions. This rootstock is particularly suitable for both sweet cherries and sour cherries and is often chosen for cultivation with high planting densities thanks to its dwarf growth (about 50% less vigorous than the Prunus avium seedling).
Key features:
Vigour and Growth Mode: Gisela® 5 has semi-dwarf growth, resulting in a tree height of about 3 metres after five years, similar to the apple rootstock 'M.26'. The trees have an open and spreading growth habit with wide branch angles, although branching can sometimes be a bit sparse.
Fast in production: This rootstock is precocious (early in production), allowing yields to start sooner than with other rootstocks.
Suitable for high planting densities: Dwarf growth allows the trees to be planted closer together, providing higher yields per hectare without the trees becoming too large for efficient harvesting.
Soil and Climate: Gisela® 5 performs excellently in well-drained soils and is suitable for a variety of soil and climate conditions. For optimal results, it is recommended to use this rootstock on good soils.
Low root storage: Gisela® 5 has little root storage, which facilitates maintenance and reduces the risk of unwanted growth.
Support: As the trees remain relatively small, permanent support is required to keep the trees growing properly and support the branches.
Health and Resistance characters:
Phytophthora: Limited susceptibility to phytophthora.
Bacterial cancer: Some susceptibility to bacterial cancer.
Root fusarium / Oak and honey root fusarium: Some susceptibility to these fungi.
Crown Gall: Some susceptibility to crown gall caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
Replant complex: Limited sensitivity to the replant complex.
Application:
The Gisela® 5 rootstock is ideal for sweet cherry and sour cherry production in intensive cherry plantations. Its dwarf growth and early production make it an excellent choice for commercial fruit production where higher planting densities are desired. The rootstock is best suited to good soils, where it performs optimally in terms of growth and fruit quality.
