The Prunus Garnem is a selected rootstock that originates from the crossing of the Spanish almond variety 'Garfi' and the North American peach 'Nemared'. This rootstock has been granted European Community Trademark rights under number 16363 and is mainly used for almond, peach and nectarine varieties. Garnem was chosen because of its excellent compatibility in grafting, and offers very good performances in both the nursery and in the field.
Key features:
Vigor and Habit: The Garnem rootstock has a strong vigor that is comparable to or even stronger than GF677. Plants grow upright with little to no branching in the first growing season, making them easier to train for good tree structure.
Leaf characteristics: The leaves are large and red, with an intermediate character of almond and peach, which gives the rootstock a unique appearance. These leaves contribute to the robust growth of the plant.
High percentage of bud-take: Garnem has a high percentage of success in grafting all known peach, nectarine and almond varieties. This makes it an excellent choice for both spring and summer grafting and micrografting.
Drought tolerance: This rootstock has excellent tolerance to drought and poor soils, making it ideal for areas with limited water sources. Although its tolerance to iron chlorosis is lower than GF677, Garnem performs well in replanting situations.
Tolerance to Nematodes: Garnem shows good tolerance to the main root-knot nematodes affecting Prunus, such as Meloidogyne arenaria, M. hispanica, M. incognita and M. javanica. This makes it a good choice for soils where nematodes can be a problem.
Avoiding excessive growth: Plants grafted onto Garnem have a higher growth vigor than those grafted onto GF677 and require summer pruning to prevent excessive shoot growth and crown shading, which could otherwise have a negative impact on fruit size and quality.
Limits:
Tolerance to Asphyxia: Garnem is less tolerant to waterlogging than GF677, which is important to consider in areas with heavy soils that are prone to waterlogging.
Crown Gall Susceptibility: This rootstock is susceptible to crown gall caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a disease that can cause damage to the roots and trunk of the tree.
Application:
The Prunus Garnem rootstock is ideal for intensive cultivation of peaches, nectarines and almonds, especially in situations with nematode problems. Although it is less suitable for waterlogged or chalky soils, it offers considerable advantages in drought-prone areas or poorly drained soils.
