Beschrijving
The Prunus domestica 'Hauszwetsche', also known as baking plum, is a classic plum variety loved for its versatility and rich flavor. This plum tree not only offers a graceful appearance with its white blossoms in spring, but also produces an abundance of purple-blue fruits in autumn.
Fruit
The plums of the 'Hauszwetsche' are medium to large, oblong in shape and purple-blue to black-blue in colour. The flesh is green-yellow, juicy and deliciously sweet. These plums are perfect as a hand plum, but are especially known as the baking plum for pies and compotes. The harvest period runs from september to october.
Flowering and pollination
In April the tree blooms profusely with white flowers, which contributes to the ornamental value of your garden. 'Hauszwetsche' is self-pollinating, but for optimum fruit bearing cross pollination is recommended. Good pollinators are for example:
- Beauty of Louvain
- Queen Claude d'Althan
- Victoria
Growth and care
The tree grows to a height of 6-8 metres and has a semi-open, slightly irregular crown. It thrives best in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Pruning can be done in the spring after flowering or in the autumn after harvest. When pruning, ensure a dry, warm day and retain sufficient older branches for a good harvest in the following season.
