The Prunus avium 'Kordia' is a beautiful and very popular cherry tree that produces large, dark red cherries with a sweet, crunchy flavour. The Kordia cherry is perfect for eating fresh and is also called the "meat cherry" because of its firm flesh. This tree not only produces delicious fruit, but in spring it adorns itself with an abundance of pale pink blossoms, making it a real eye-catcher.
Features:
- Fruit: Kordia cherries are large, juicy and dark red in colour, ideal for eating fresh or for use in recipes. Harvest time is in July.
- Pollination: Although Kordia is self-pollinating, cross-pollination with other cherry varieties such as 'Lapins', 'Sunburst', 'Hedelfinger' or 'Castor' can significantly increase yields.
- Pruning: To keep the tree compact, prune back all new shoots after harvest, leaving 4-5 leaves per branch. Pruning in winter is not recommended.
Care and Pitch:
- Location: The tree thrives best in full sun for optimum flowering and fruiting.
- Fertilisation: For healthy growth, fertilise the tree in February and in autumn with organic-mineral fertiliser.
- Rootstock: This cherry tree is grown on the Colt® rootstock, which ensures moderate growth and also makes it suitable for smaller gardens.
