Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet', better known as Bergamot plant, is an easy and popular perennial that brightens up your border in summer. From July to September, it blooms with large, hairy clusters of bright, scarlet flowers that are larger than in other Monarda species. The flowers stand out beautifully against the purple-green bracts and glossy, green leaves. Those leaves smell nicely of bergamot and also remain resistant to mildew, making this plant healthier than many other varieties.
This plant grows about 100-120 cm tall and is a real favourite with butterflies and bees, making your garden nice and lively. It prefers full sun, but a little shade will do as well. Give it a spot in nutrient-rich, cool and moist soil with good water permeability. It even does well in dry sandy soil, but it needs extra water in long droughts in summer. In winter, the soil should not be too wet or it will fail. As it doesn't like competition, give it a bit more space - about 60 cm between plants is perfect.
In terms of care, it is simple: prune it back a little in May (but do not fertilise) for sturdy growth, and after flowering you can cut it to the ground. Every 4 years, you can dig it up and split it to keep it fresh. Ideal for borders, and the aromatic leaves add an extra touch to your garden. A strong, colourful plant that will give you years of pleasure!
