Description
Mespilus germanica 'Westerveld' is a slow growing small tree with a characteristic spherical crown that can grow to about 6 meters high. The young twigs are gray and woolly haired, while the older bark is light gray and smooth. The elongated ovate leaf is very finely serrated and can be softly hairy, especially when young. In the fall the leaf transforms into beautiful shades of reddish brown to deep golden yellow.
The brown, hard fruits of 'Westerveld' have strikingly large calyx lips and only become edible when they start to rot, often after the first night frosts. This variety is guaranteed to bear a lot of fruit every year and is known for its larger fruits compared to the species. It was introduced and named in the Netherlands by Boomkwekerij Westerveld around 1975.
Mespilus germanica 'Westerveld' blooms in May and June with white flowers on the 2-year-old wood and can pollinate itself. As a low trunk in a pot, this medlar tree reaches a height of about 5-6 meters. The fruits are quite large and mild in taste. The ideal location for the Mespilus germanica 'Westerveld' is sunny to semi-shade. This variety is an improved selection and particularly suitable for smaller gardens, where it not only provides a beautiful bloom in May, but also offers delicious fruits to pick and taste.
