Description
Mespilus germanica 'Nottingham', also known as Medlar, is a relatively fast-growing and spreading shrub that can bear abundantly at a young age. This variety remains smaller than other species, due to its somewhat weaker growth, but still offers a good harvest. The fruits of 'Nottingham' have a striking red to copper-coloured blush and ripen in the autumn, remaining on the tree until after the New Year.
This medlar thrives in a sunny to lightly shaded location and is self-pollinating, meaning that no other pollinator is needed to produce fruit. The tree grows to about 4 metres tall and is an excellent choice for medium-sized gardens.
'Nottingham' is an old variety with a good reputation for flavour. The fruits are mildly tart to pleasantly sweet, and have an aroma that is described as a mix of apples and pears. Although the fruits are small to medium in size, the production is generally high. This variety, originating from Nottingham, UK, is a valuable addition to any garden.
