Description
Magnolia x soulangeana, also known as the Beaver Tree, is one of the most popular and well-loved Magnolia species. This beautiful ornamental tree is known for its profuse flowering with large, tulip-like flowers that are white with pink. Magnolia x soulangeana often blooms as early as March, even before the leaves appear, creating an impressive spring scene in the garden.
Features:
- Bloom: Richly flowering with large, white and pink flowers resembling tulips. The flowers appear in March and bloom before the leaves emerge.
- Height and width: This slow-growing shrub can grow into a multi-stemmed tree, with a crown that can grow as wide as it is tall, up to about 4-5 metres.
- Crown shape: Initially broadly vase-shaped, later ovoid.
- Leaves: Green, appearing after flowering.
- Indian summer flowering: In a sunny location, post-flowering may occur in late summer.
Pitch and Care:
- Location: Sunny, on humus-rich and well-drained soil. Dry soil is poorly tolerated.
- Hardiness: Well hardy, but flowers can be damaged by late night frosts.
- Pruning: Pruning is not necessary; Magnolia x soulangeana does best as a solitary plant.
- Carrots: Fleshy roots growing both shallow and deep.
Particulars:
- Variety: This Magnolia is a hybrid between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora. There are more than 40 named cultivars, which differ in flower colour and shape.
- Fruiting: Often sterile flowers, making fruiting rare.
- Solitary Plant: Magnolias are true solitary plants that like to stand alone and get plenty of space to show their full splendour.
Magnolia x soulangeana is a wonderful addition to any garden, offering a stunning display of flowers in early spring. With its striking tulip-like flowers and wide, vase-shaped crown, this ornamental tree is a real eye-catcher and a valuable classic for both small and large gardens.
