Ligularia przewalskii, better known as Soleweed or Crossweed, is a strong and easy perennial that will give your garden a big boost. From June to August, it blooms with long, slender clusters of pale yellow flowers on sturdy, almost black stems that can grow up to 120-150 cm tall. The flowers look a bit like candles and stand out beautifully against the large, green leaves. Those leaves are palmate and have a serrated edge, but can droop if the soil gets too dry.
Originally from Russia, this plant belongs to the Composite family. It is perfect for a spot in semi-shade or shade, but also does well in the sun as long as the soil remains moist enough. It likes humus-rich, cool and wet soil, such as near a pond edge or in a marshy area. Dry soil is not its thing, so make sure it gets enough water. The nice thing is: snails usually leave it alone, and it can withstand cold, sea wind and even some dirty air.
Sole weed attracts bees, butterflies and bumblebees, so your garden will come alive. Plant it in groups of 3 per square metre for the best effect. It grows in a clump and loses its leaves in winter, but returns in spring. Ideal for borders, pond edges or a natural garden. A plant that requires little care and stays beautiful for a long time!
