The Ficus carica 'Melanzana' Fig Tree is a classic Italian fig variety that makes a beautiful addition to any garden. This small fruit tree, with a height of 2-4 meters and a wide crown of up to 5 meters, has a characteristic appearance. The branches are not densely branched and curled, while the smooth, light gray bark gives the tree an elegant appearance.
The leaves of 'Melanzana' are large (10-20 cm), leathery and rough, usually palmately divided into 3-5 lobes, sometimes simple, and have a bright green color. During the flowering period in June-July the flowers appear in green, fleshy, pear-shaped inflorescences of about 1 cm in size.
The fruits of the 'Melanzana' have a pear-shaped to flat roundish shape and are dark purple in color, juicy and very tasty. They ripen from September to October and are a real treat for lovers of sweet fruits.
The name 'Melanzana' is Italian for eggplant, because of the appearance of the fig. With its elongated shape and deep purple color, this fig does indeed look like an eggplant.
