Ficus carica 'Dalmatia' or 'Précoce de Dalmatia', also known as the Common Fig, belongs to the Moraceae family. This versatile shrub can grow up to 3 metres tall and is characterised by large, dark green leaves. During the months of April and May, 'Dalmatia' blooms with small, green flowers, followed by the development of fruits, which ripen around September.
The fruits of Ficus carica 'Dalmatia' are large and have a greenish-yellow skin with juicy, red flesh. This variety is known to bear fruit early in the season, which can, however, pose a challenge during spring frosts. It is possible to grow this fig tree in a pot.
The rather large fruits are greenish-yellow in colour and have sweet and juicy red flesh. Harvesting starts as early as July. It is important to use stemmed specimens, as sown specimens hardly produce any fruit.
Ficus carica 'Dalmatia' thrives best in well-drained soil in a warm, sunny location. This Mediterranean tree can overwinter here, provided it is covered or sheltered between walls facing south or southwest. 'Dalmatia' is hardy to -12°C.
This cultivar generally requires little to no pruning. Ficus carica 'Dalmation' on stem bears fruit twice a year: the first time in July and the second time in September and October. The second harvest consists of lots of fruit with a green skin and bright red flesh, with a deliciously sweet flavour.
