The Cydonia oblonga 'Champion' is a robust quince tree known for its rich fruit yield and decorative appearance. This tree produces pear-shaped fruits with a greenish-yellow skin, often covered in velvety hair. The fruits have firm, bright yellow flesh that turns a beautiful pinkish-red colour when cooked. Although the fruits are not edible raw, they lend themselves perfectly to making compote, jam, stews and even additions in applesauce.
'Champion' blooms in May and June with beautiful pale pink to white flowers that attract bees and butterflies, making it a valuable garden plant. The tree is self-pollinating and easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. The fruits ripen from September to October and have a lovely fragrance.
This tree thrives best in a sunny position in moist, well-drained soil. Its compact, erratic growth form makes it suitable for both small gardens and orchards. 'Champion' is one of the oldest and most reliable varieties, introduced in 1870, and is still highly regarded for its rich harvest and versatility.
