The Cercidiphyllum japonicum, better known as the Katsura tree or Heart tree, is an impressive ornamental tree that makes a beautiful addition to larger gardens and park-like environments. With its unique features and attractive seasonal changes, this tree is sure to attract attention.
Features:
- Grow: This tree grows quickly and can reach a height of 40-45 meters in Japan and China. In the Netherlands it usually remains limited to 20 meters, which makes it unsuitable for small gardens.
- Sheet: The heart-shaped leaves grow in pairs on the branches. In spring, the leaves emerge purple, then turn blue-green in summer. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful yellow to ruby red.
- Bloom: The flowers are inconspicuous and appear in May. Male flowers consist of bunches of stamens, while female flowers are light pink and in clusters.
- Smell: The fallen leaves smell of freshly baked cookies or caramel in autumn, which contributes to its German name 'Kuchenbaum'.
Pitch and Care:
- Location: Ideal for a semi-shaded to sunny location. The soil should be moist but well-drained. Dry soil is poorly tolerated.
- Pruning: Pruning is not necessary, but can be done after flowering if desired.
- Planting: When planting, use planting soil for a good start. The roots are superficial with fine branching.
Particulars:
- Seasonal changes: The tree is particularly attractive because of its seasonal changes, especially the autumn colours and the scent of the fallen leaves.
- Hardiness: Very hardy and resistant to frost. The tree can be sensitive to night frost damage in spring, but this recovers quickly.
The Cercidiphyllum japonicum is a beautiful and versatile tree that is ideal for both large gardens and park-like environments. With its beautiful autumn colours, unique scent and attractive growth form, this tree is a real eye-catcher that continues to surprise year after year.
