Castanea sativa 'Marrone di Marradi', also known as Sweet chestnut, is a deciduous fruit tree known for its tree-like growth form and extensive, branched foliage. This majestic tree can reach heights of up to 30 metres, making it a striking addition to any setting. Its large, glossy deep green leaves have a serrated edge, adding to its visual appeal.
In June-July, this tree graces us with lovely creamy white buds that grow into vibrant flowers. By mid-October, it starts bearing its medium-sized fruits, characterised by a rich mahogany-coloured skin. Known for their excellent flavour, these fruits are thick and round, and they store well. These fruits have a sweet, nutty flavour with white flesh of excellent quality.
This variety thrives best in well-drained sandy soils but can adapt to different environments, as long as it receives sufficient water. For optimal growth, periodic pruning of older branches and correct fertilisation of the tree is recommended.
Originating from Marradi, Florence province, Italy, 'Marrone di Marradi' has a moderately fast growth rate and a round, often irregular crown. Its oblong dark green leaves turn pale yellow, golden yellow and light brown before autumn. The bark of older trunks shows deep, angry, longitudinal grooves, contributing to its distinctive appearance.
In June, the tree produces lightly scented, pale yellow flowers, which attract bees and other beneficial insects. Although it can self-pollinate to some extent, cross-pollination significantly increases fruit yields.
Castanea sativa 'Marrone di Marradi' thrives best in warm, nutritious garden soil and is preferably planted alone or in groups in gardens and parks, preferably in sheltered locations.
