Description
Calliandra surinamensis 'Dixie Pink', also known as Suriname's Powder Brush, is a beautiful evergreen tub plant native to Suriname. This branched shrub is notable for its beautiful feathered leaves, but especially for its striking deep pink fluffy flowers, which resemble pink powder puffs.
This plant is suitable for bonsai and thrives best in a frost-free environment, at a temperature of about 10°C in winter. In cloudy weather or towards evening, the leaves close.
The flowering of Calliandra surinamensis 'Dixie Pink' is spectacular, with beautiful deep pink fluffy flowers appearing from April to May and continuing until the end of October. These flowers smell deliciously sweet and are highly recommended for lovers of fragrant plants.
Although in the wild this plant can grow to a shrub of over 3 metres, as a tub plant it is usually limited to a maximum height of 150 cm. Regular pruning can keep the plant even smaller than 1 metre.
Calliandra surinamensis 'Dixie Pink' thrives well with regular fertilisation from May to September, during winter the plant does not need fertilisation, but regular watering is important. Overwinter the plant at a temperature of at least +5ºC and put it back outside in a warm place in spring from May, preferably out of the wind.
Pruning is best done immediately after flowering. With its beautiful flowers and easy care, Calliandra surinamensis 'Dixie Pink' is a valuable addition to any garden or patio.
