Astrantia major 'Shaggy', also known as Zeeland knotweed, is a lovely perennial with large, pretty flowers that look like little pincushions. They start out pale pink with a deep pink centre and later turn white with green dots. It blooms from June to September and grows to about 60 cm high. The firm, dark green leaves look a bit like those of a geranium.
This plant likes to stand in semi-shade in moist, well-drained soil - the more sun, the wetter the soil should be. It is easy to maintain: cut back everything in spring, remove old flowers for more blooms and remove unsightly leaves before winter. Well hardy, perfect as a cut or dried flower and a magnet for bees and butterflies. Tip: combine with Astilbe for a great look!
