Astrantia major 'Alba', better known as Zeeland knotweed or Great stargazer, is an easy plant with pretty white flowers that have a green tip and sometimes show a little pink. It flowers in June and July and grows about 60 cm high. The dark green leaves grow in a bushy form and look somewhat hand-like. This plant fits well in borders, shade gardens or under trees that do not root too close to the ground.
It likes to stand in semi-shade or with some filtered sunlight and likes moist, well-drained soil - the more sun, the wetter the soil should be. 'Alba' is a white variety, less greenish than the popular 'Shaggy'. It needs little care: remove unsightly leaves before winter and cut off old flowers for extra blooms. Good against cold, attracts bees and butterflies, but watch out for snails!
