Enrich your garden with the majestic Astilbe chinensis 'Superba', a stately panicle espalier that is a real eye-catcher. This deciduous perennial reaches a height of about 80 cm and flaunts large, erect flower panicles in a vibrant magenta-pink to lavender-purple hue from August to September. The ferny, mid to dark green leaves are beautifully feathered and remain decorative even after flowering, especially in winter.
'Superba' thrives best in humus-rich, moist soil that never dries out, but it does not tolerate wet feet in winter. A position in light shade is ideal - too much sun can shorten flowering time - although it can handle full sun provided the soil remains sufficiently moist. Add compost or farmyard manure in spring for an extra boost. Perfect for pond edges, borders or in larger groups (minimum 5 plants) for a spectacular effect.
