Description
The Asimina triloba, also known as the Pawpaw tree, is a unique fruiting plant belonging to the Annonaceae family. Notably, it is the only plant in this family that is very hardy, making it suitable for cold climates. This deciduous tree or shrub grows slowly, approximately 20 cm per year, and can reach a height of 6 meters, although it can easily be pruned to any desired height. Our pawpaw trees have a delivery height of approximately 60-70cm.
Native to Northeastern America and parts of Canada, the Pawpaw thrives in areas with shorter summers. After the fifth year, the plant can already bear fruit on young wood, but in general, the first fruits are expected from the sixth or seventh year. The dark brown flowers bloom from late April to May, on bare wood, for about three weeks.
The fruits ripen from early September to mid-October and are loved for their custard-like flavor. In addition to the edible fruits, pawpaw trees are known for their purple flowers and bright, golden yellow fall colors. The leaves have a subtle green pepper scent when crushed.
Asimina triloba is completely hardy and can survive well in outdoor conditions, although it is a deciduous tree. With its easy cultivation and maintenance, the Pawpaw is also gaining popularity in other regions, thanks to its attractive appearance and delicious fruits.
