Anemone x Hybrida 'Whirlwind', better known as Japanese anemone or autumn anemone, is a beautiful feature that enriches the garden in autumn. From August to September, this plant adorns itself with semi-double to double white flowers borne on sturdy, tall stems that reach 80 to 120 cm in height. The large flowers with golden yellow stamens stand out beautifully against the lobed leaves and form a stunning contrast with dark backgrounds or ornamental grasses.
This hardy perennial thrives best in semi-shade - even under tall trees - on well-drained, humus-rich and moist soil. It tolerates brief droughts, but very wet feet in winter are disastrous. In the first year, mulch as winter protection is recommended, and watch out for snails. With its creeping roots, it gradually expands, making it ideal for group planting, borders or as a striking accent among other plants and shrubs.
