Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the Currant Tree, is a charming shrub or small tree with a multi-stemmed growth habit and a broad, round crown. In winter, this species stands out for its fine branching and striking grey bark and branches. When budding, the oval leaves have a deep bronze colour, which later changes to dark green.
In autumn, the Currant Tree flaunts beautiful shades of yellow and red in its leaves, while the striking flower clusters bloom bright white. In late summer, the edible currants appear, which are blue-black and frosted, with a deliciously sweet and juicy flavour. The multi-stemmed Currant Tree has a shallow and fine root system and thrives best in slightly calcareous soil that is neither too wet nor too dry.
Amelanchier lamarckii is the most well-known Currant tree, flowering early in spring with beautiful white flowers. It is a tall upright shrub that can grow up to 500 cm high, but usually stays a bit lower. This species tolerates pruning well and can even be used as a hedge plant, although pruning is not necessary unless there is little space in the garden. The Currant Tree grows quite wide and develops beautiful autumn colours ranging from red to orange, with a particularly beautiful red colour in autumn.
The Currant Tree thrives in all soil types, even north-facing, and is often planted solitary or in groups along forest edges. Available as a shrub or a tree, this versatile plant adds a touch of elegance and colour to any garden.
