The Amelanchier alnifolia 'Smokey' is a versatile shrub of Canadian origin, beloved for its sweet, juicy berries and graceful appearance. This cultivar, introduced in 1952, reaches a final height of about 4.5 metres and a width of up to 6 metres, thanks to its extensive root growth.
Properties
- Fruit: The purple-black, bluish berries with a diameter of about 13 mm are deliciously sweet and juicy. Perfect for fresh consumption, jam or jelly. One mature bush can produce up to 7.5 kg of fruit.
- Flower and leaf: White blossoms appear in spring, followed by leaves that turn beautiful colours in autumn, ranging from orange-red to deep brown-red.
- Growth mode: Initially the shoots grow straight up, but as the plant ages, gracefully arching branches develop.

- Bottom: The shrub is not demanding, but thrives best in moist, slightly acidic soil.
- Light: Prefers a sunny to semi-shaded location.
